Timbuktu (1959)

This review is on Timbukti from 1959 which stars: Victor Mature, Yvonne De Carlo, George Dolenz, John Dehner, Henry Hull and is directed by Jacques Tourneur.

In 1940's Timbuktu, a colonel and his beautiful wife arrive to conflicts between their French garrison and Tuareg rebels. An American mercenary sets his eyes on the colonel's wife, while a kidnapped holy man must be returned to bring peace.



This is a MGM Limited Edition Collection release and has pretty good video and audio quality. The only special feature is the original trailer. The film in presented in b&w, Widescreen and runs for about 91mins (1hr and 31mins).

I would give this film a 6/10 and the DVD a 3/5.
Overall this is a good DVD release and is a film I recommend.

Down to the Sea in Ships (1949)

This review is on Down to the Sea in Ships from 1949 which stars: Richard Widmark, Lionel Barrymore, Dean Stockwell, Cecil Kellaway, Gene Lockhart, Berry Kroeger, John McIntire, Henry Morgan, Harry Davenport, Paul Harvey, Jay C. Flippen and is directed by Henry Hathaway.

Whaling ship captain Bering Joy takes his grandson Jed on a whaling expedition to teach him life values such as honesty, courage, wisdom,fairness and hard work. First mate Dan Lunceford is entrusted with teaching Jed his schoolwork.



This is a Twentieth Century Fox Cinema Archives release and has great video and audio quality. There is no special features included with this release. The film in presented in b&w, Full screen and runs for about 120mins (2hrs).

I would give this film a 7/10 and the DVD a 3/5.
Overall this is a good DVD release and is a film I recommend.

Plymouth Adventure (1952)

This review is on Plymouth Adventure from 1952 which stars: Spencer Tracy, Gene Tierney, Van Johnson, Leo Genn, Barry Jones, Lloyd Nolan and is directed by Clarence Brown.

In 1620, a group of religious outcasts boarded the Mayflower in England and set sail for the New World, where they founded a tiny wilderness outpost that was the genesis for what would become the United States of America.



This is a Warner Archive release and has pretty good video and audio quality. The film is presented in color, full screen and runs for about 105mins (1hr 45mins).

I would give this film a 7/10 and the DVD a 3/5. Overall this is a great DVD release and is a film I recommend.

Santiago (1956)

This review is on Santiago from 1956 which stars: Alan Ladd, Rossana Podesta, Lloyd Nolan, Chill Wills, Paul Fix and is directed by Gordon Douglas.

Desperate for arms in their fight against Spain, Cuban partisans agree to double the price if American gunrunner Cash Adams (Ladd) smuggles a boatload of weapons to their Santiago hideout. Forced into an uneasy alliance with an old enemy (Lloyd Nolan) and a sexy freedom fighter (Rossana Podesta), Adams must battle his way through naval blockades, dense jungles and heavily guarded passes to convey the munitions to a remote mountain outpost where the rebels and payment await.
